Cathy Butterworth
Integrative Psychotherapist, MA, MBACP

Deciding to try therapy can feel like a big step, especially if you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or uncertain about yourself or your relationships. Many people come to therapy wanting to better understand themselves, their patterns, or how they relate to others.

I’m an Integrative Psychotherapist and Counsellor working in-person with adults in Shoreditch, Old Street, and Woodford Green or on-line. I offer a collaborative and supportive space where you can reflect, gain insight, and explore what matters most to you. If you’re considering therapy, you’re very welcome to get in touch and see whether we might work well together.

I hold an MA in Integrative Psychotherapy & Counselling (Existential) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Psychotherapy & Counselling, and I am a registered member of the BACP, working in line with its ethical framework.

Helping you understand yourself, your relationships, and the patterns that shape your life.

My Approach
I am an Integrative Psychotherapist and Counsellor offering therapy to adults in Shoreditch, Old Street, and Woodford Green, as well as online. I work with people who may be feeling anxious, low in mood, stuck in unhelpful patterns, or navigating changes in their lives, relationships, or sense of identity.

My therapeutic work is grounded in existential and relational psychotherapy. This means I am interested in how your life experiences and relationships past and present shape how you see yourself, relate to others, and make sense of the world. I work collaboratively and at a pace that feels right for you, supporting reflection, emotional understanding, and meaningful change.

Before training as a psychotherapist, I spent over 26 years working in the fashion industry, including 13 years running my own business. Working in high-pressure, fast-paced environments has given me first-hand experience of the demands, expectations, and responsibilities that often sit alongside success. This background informs my work with clients experiencing burnout, perfectionism, anxiety, self-criticism, and difficulties switching off, particularly those working in creative industries or demanding professional roles.

Alongside my private practice, I have experience supporting individuals living with HIV and long-term health conditions, working with issues around identity, adjustment, and emotional wellbeing. I am also a co-founder of Hara House, a mind–body wellbeing practice in Shoreditch, which reflects my commitment to working holistically and creating spaces that feel thoughtful, calm, and supportive.

How I Work
I work in a way that is collaborative and tailored to you as an individual. My approach is grounded in existential and relational psychotherapy, meaning we explore how your experiences, relationships, and ways of coping have shaped how you feel about yourself and your life.I draw on a range of therapeutic perspectives where helpful, including relational and parts-based ways of understanding experience. This can be useful if you find yourself stuck in certain patterns, struggling in relationships, or feeling pulled in different directions internally. The focus is not on techniques or labels, but on helping you make sense of what you’re experiencing and supporting change in a way that feels right for you. There is no expectation to talk about anything before you feel ready. We work at your pace, with attention to your relationship with yourself and with others, creating space for reflection, understanding, and greater choice moving forward. My work is primarily talking therapy, though where helpful I may introduce simple grounding or breathing exercises to support emotional regulation and self-awareness within and beyond sessions.
Who I Work With
I work with adults navigating a wide range of life experiences and challenges. Many people come to therapy feeling anxious, low in mood, uncertain about their identity, or struggling with relationships, loss, or major life transitions. Some notice recurring patterns in how they relate to themselves and others and want to better understand them.

I also have experience supporting individuals living with HIV or long-term health conditions, helping them navigate emotional wellbeing, identity, and adjustment.

I welcome clients from all backgrounds, including LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent individuals, and aim to create a space that respects and honours your identity and experience.

Whether you are new to therapy or returning, my aim is to provide a thoughtful, supportive, and collaborative space where you can explore your experiences, develop insight, and find ways to feel more empowered in your life.

I work with adults experiencing difficulties such as:
